‘Air vent’ sex pest convicted of hospital rape

A man found hiding in an AIR VENT the night before he sexually assaulted a woman in a hospital toilet has been convicted of rape.
Vile Ian Joseph, 44, was found guilty of raping the woman in a unisex toilet in the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Bizarrely, police caught Joseph sleeping in an air vent in the hospital the night before the brutal attack on October 30 last year.
Oxford Crown Court heard Joseph was asked to leave by officers but he returned the following night.
The 21-year-old woman, told the court she was waiting for her sister and assumed Joseph, who was hanging around in the reception, worked at the hospital.
She said at about 8.35pm he followed her into the cubicle, locked the door and performed a sex act on her.
In a video interview played to jurors during the three-day trial, the woman described her ordeal.
She said: ”He said, through gritted teeth, I was making him mad and he was going to get really mad in a minute.
”Through sheer fear I did what he said. He told me to turn around and then backed me to the wall.
”He said if I was quiet he would let go of me and he would only be a minute and he would go.
”His voice was very angry so I was really scared. I found it really hard to be quiet because I was so scared.”
The victim, a student, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said the sex act ”seemed like forever but I suppose it was only about 30 seconds or so”.
Joseph, of no fixed address, was arrested in Southampton two days later and claimed he had walked in on the woman in the cubicle but apologised and quickly left.
Joseph, who denied the charge, said: ”I was off my head, but sex was not on my mind. There was no physical contact between us.”
Joseph was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant in Southampton two days after the rape.
He told officers the rape was a ”conspiracy” to stop him from sleeping at the hospital.
Judge Patrick Eccles adjourned sentencing for a probation report assessing whether Joseph presents enough of a danger to the public to warrant indeterminate imprisonment.
He said of the sentence: ”It will inevitably be one that involves a substantial period of imprisonment.”
Joseph was remanded in custody to be sentenced next month.
