Four men are in custody after a 22-year-old woman collapsed and died in front of 700 people in a packed pub.

The unnamed victim was found unconscious by staff and Bank Holiday revellers at the Walkabout bar in Plymouth, Devon.

She was given first aid by paramedics and rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival following the incident at 9.20pm on Saturday.

Police say they had been called to the bar after reports of a disturbance and four men were arrested and taken into custody.

But officers have refused to confirm whether the death was connected to the fight and say it is being treated as unexplained.

The pub was immediately closed after the incident as police interviewed hundreds of drinkers as potential witnesses.

They are now appealing for further help and are urging anyone who may have taken mobile phone footage to come forward.

Superintendent David Sumner said officers are also waiting for the results of a post mortem.

He said: ‘Four men are in custody as police investigate the death of a 22-year-old woman at a pub.

”The local woman was found to be unconscious and ambulance staff attended, giving her first aid before taking her to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

”The four men were arrested at the scene in connection with reports of a fight on the premises. Officers are looking at whether the woman who died was assaulted, or whether her death was unconnected.

”Officers are still speaking to witnesses and are examining CCTV footage taken at the time. Pub-goers and staff were kept at the scene to allow police to take witness statements.”

Police say two 22-year-olds, a 23-year-old and a 20-year-old were arrested and are still in custody.
