An adrenaline junkie has been nicknamed ‘The Iceman’ after he drove at a record-breaking 208mph on a frozen lake.

Janne Laitinen got behind the wheel of an Audi RS6 super-saloon equipped with a special set of studded tyres manufactured by Nokian.

He then took the German car to the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland for the daredevil challenge.

For the test, engineers modified the Audi RS6’s suspension and tuned the car’s V10 engine to develop almost 1,000bhp.

After two runs on the 7.5-mile long, 80cm thick track in temperatures of minus 16, Laitinen averaged a staggering 335.7kph (208.6mph).

The speed beat Laitinen’s own previous record by 2.5mph, which he last year.

At this speed the Audi is travelling at more than 93 metres per second as each tyre stud hits the ice 43 times per second.

Afterwards, Janne said: “It was by no means easy and it was great to bag another record. The important thing was to transfer all the power into the ice with the tyres.

“We were able to do that, even though the bumps did disturb the grip quite a bit. In fact, there was still some room to increase speed but, the ice was too bouncy.”
