Football presenter Adrian Chiles has been forced to make an embarrassing apology for calling West Bromwich Albion player Peter Odemwingie – a T**t.

The ITV Sports host was presenting the Premier League club’s end of season awards bash when he made the foul-mouthed insult directed at the wantaway striker.

The 46-year-old’s jibe stunned the 800 strong audience and left fans and players gobsmacked at Birmingham’s International Convention Centre on April 28.

Chiles quipped: “Our fourth award of the evening is for ‘tweet of the year’.

“Oh, no, sorry it’s ‘t**t of the year’ – and the winner is Peter Odemwingie.”

Albion boss Steve Clarke even blasted Chiles for his comment branding it “our of order” and “stupid”.

The Nigerian centre forward – who was not in attendance at the ceremony  -was also understood to be upset by the “hurtful” insult.

Today it emerged the life-long Baggies fan had telephoned Odemwingie five days after the incident to make a grovelling apology.

A club source said: “Peter received a call from Adrian to apologise for what he said – he admitted it was wrong and said sorry for any hurt he had caused.

“It’s all sorted now – there’s no hard feelings.”

Odemwingie’s future at the club is looking increasingly precarious after he was fined two weeks’ wages for a series of attacks on the club on Twitter.

The former Locomotiv Moscow player was also involved in a bust-up with a fan during Albion’s 3-2 defeat to Wigan at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Odemwingie, 31, was criticised by a supporter while he spoke to his wife, Sarah, who was with their four-month-old son sat in the stands.

As he warmed up he was also booed and he was the subject of obscene chants from fans.

Clarke admitted after the game the crowd reaction prompted him to leave Odemwingie on the bench.

That followed a previous fine of two weeks’ wages for driving to Queens Park Rangers’ ground Loftus Road in January in an attempt to force through a move to QPR.

The total fines are believed to be in the region of £150,000.

Odemwingie, who has a year left on his contract, is expected to head for the exit door when the transfer window opens again this summer.
