Police confirmed they were called to investigate a body found at an address in Salt Lake City.

A spokesperson said: “There is nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual.”

The cause of death is yet to be established.

Starr’s music career began in the mid 1980’s when he formed the band Diamond Lie with Jerry Cantrell and drummer Sean Kinney.

The band later changed their name to Alice in Chains and shot to fame as part of the early 90’s grunge movement.

However, Starr struggled with heroin addiction and was thrown out of the band in 1992 due to his drug problems.

In 2009 he appeared on the third season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew, where he was filmed undergoing treatment for his addiction, and later starred in the spin-off Sober House.

However he never fully managed to beat his demons and just last month was arrested and found to be in possession of several controlled substances, including the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

Dr Drew posted his condolences on Twitter at the news, saying: “Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. Our prayers are with his family.”
