Andy Carroll ordered to lose weight ahead of debut

Liverpool’s record signing Andy Carroll has been ordered by club staff to lose weight before making his debut.

The 6ft 4 striker striker, who is currently out injured with a thigh injury, is understood to have bulked up since being sidelined in December.

Carroll is now rumoured to be on a “rigorous training schedule to slim him down”, according to The Mirror.

Boyzone fan Carroll, 22, was rumoured to be in with a chance of making the Liverpool squad for yesterday’s defeat against West Ham United but didn’t travel with the squad with Kenny Dalglish refusing to take any risks on his big money buy.

Liverpool fans will hope the Geordie giant recovers from his thigh injury soon – with the Reds’ next match at home to Manchester United on Sunday.

The home team were dealt a major blow during yesterday’s defeat with both Raul Meireles and Martin Kelly leaving the field injured. Kelly is expected to be out for up to a month with a hamstring injury.

Manchester United, meanwhile, were dealt a stroke of luck earlier today after the FA announced it wouldn’t be taking disciplinary action against Wayne Rooney following Saturday’s elbowing incident against Wigan Athletic.

United face Chelsea on Tuesday as they look to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the table. Victory against Chelsea will give United an 18 point lead over the London outfit – all but ending Carlo Ancelotti’s chances of retaining the Premier League title.
