Anorexic student’s medical records emailed to entire year group

A sixth-form college has been placed under investigation after an email containing medical records of a pupil suffering from anorexia was sent to an entire year group.

Teachers at Goldalming College, in Surrey, have apologised after accidentally emailing personal information of 328 students to their classmates.

Confidential information contained in the emails described one teenager as suffering from ”depression” and ”mental health problems”

Another teenager was listed as having a ”complex family situation” and ”possible child protection issues”.

The medical records also reveal personal details of teenagers suffering from ”anorexia” and a ”brain tumour”.

After failing to recall the email staff have issued a desperate apology and begged the college’s teenagers to delete the secret medical records.

The Information Commissioner’s Office revealed the school is being investigated for a possible breach of the data protection laws.

David Adelman, the sixth form college’s principal, said the personal information was stored to help teachers support students academically.

He said: ”We take great pride in the quality of learning support we offer our students and the accidental circulation of the list is the last thing we would have wanted to happen.

”We view this breach extremely seriously.”

Mr Adelman said the college had tried to reassure students on the list and has written to parents apologising for the mistake.

A spokesman for the Information Commissioner’s Office said the incident will be investigated thoroughly.

He said: ”Under the Data Protection Act, information related to the health of an individual is considered to be sensitive data.

”This means that organisations should take particular care when handling this type of information, irrespective of the age of the individuals involved.”
