A babysitter raped a six-year-old girl twice and attempted to do so a third time, a jury has heard.

Clive Kelly, 39, is alleged to have abused the youngster at two houses before plying her with gold jewellery, a mobile phone and money.

Bristol Crown Court heard how the girl, now a young woman, told police there was also a third occasion when he attempted, but failed, to sexually assault her.

Clive Kelly is on trial at Bristol Crown Court after denying two historical charges of rape and one of attempted rape

She told officers: “I kept thinking about it and I did not want it to happen again. If I had a drink, if I was enjoying myself, it would always bring me down.”

Kelly, from Bristol, denies two historical charges of rape and one of attempted rape.

A jury of eight women and four men watched DVDs of two interviews the complainant had with police.

She described how when she was a child Kelly took her to a back bedroom, in a house in south Bristol, put her on a bed and forced himself on her.

The woman said: “It happened after that as well. When he had a flat in Fishponds, it happened there as well.

“He put me on the bed, (and) he would undress me.”

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she was scared of Kelly as he was “not a nice person”.

She told officers of one occasion when she was in a front room with him and he told her: “Don’t say anything. Be quiet.”

She said: “I was on the carpet in the front room. I think he tried (abuse). I think my mum was there.”

The complainant told police Kelly gave her gold earrings, a mobile phone and money when she asked for it.

She said: “He was acting like he was good.”

The court heard that the woman did not tell anyone about the alleged abuse for many years, before finally speaking to her boyfriend.

She then relayed what had allegedly happened to her doctor before reporting Kelly to police in August 2011.

Kelly was arrested in January last year and made no comment to all questions in a 31-minute police interview.

The case continues.
