A couple in a long-distance relationship have finally tied the knot and become Britain’s oldest newly-weds – with a combined age of 183.

Loved-up Edna Holford, 95, met her ‘toy boy’ Harry Corton, 88, at a tea dance in Brighton fives years ago.

Harry, from Barnsley, Yorkshire, and Edna, of Redruth, Cornwall, then began a long distance romance.

They would travel the 700 mile round trip to see each other three or four times a year until Harry eventually popped the question at Easter.

The couple married in front of friends and family at Camborne Register Office in Cornwall on Saturday (14/08).

They are now Britain’s oldest newly-weds and Harry has moved south and into his blushing bride’s flat.

Harry and Edna have also decided against a honeymoon – and opted for their weekly indoor bowls game instead.

Edna said: ”I was rather surprised when he proposed but, of course, said yes. We couldn’t live in sin just because of our ages.

”We love each other. I was married in blue because our love is true. Harry has a home in Yorkshire but I couldn’t move up there, it’s too cold.

”This is about companionship as well as love. We were lonely people living on our own. Being together is fun.”

Guests at the wedding included Edna’s sister Ivy, 97, Edna’s stepdaughter, Diana Jennings, and step granddaughter, Kate Bird.

Diana said: ”It was a lovely occasion, with lots of tears. It was a very moving ceremony because it’s so rare.

”At one point the registrar asked them to move a little closer together. Harry’s reply was ‘we’ll save that for later’.”

Britain’s previous oldest newlyweds include Peggy and James Mason, of Paignton, Devon, who had a combined age of 177.
