He was said to be in good spirits when he was last seen and sent his girlfriend a text at 9pm but was never heard from again.

An appeal was launched and Sussex Police who said his death is not suspicious found a body matching his description last week.

His son Rahul Bhattacharjee-Prashar, 24, said his disappearance was “completely out of character”.

His agent Sally Long-Innes added: “He seemed completely fine to me. As far as we could tell there was nothing wrong with his state of mind.

“There were no clues in the last text message at all I’m afraid.”

Bend It Like Beckham actress Parminder Nagra, Sex in the City star Kim Cattrall and Stephen Fry all took to Twitter to appeal for help to find the actor.

Those paying tribute included Gregory Doran, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He said: “Paul was a terrific company member, a powerful, versatile actor of great presence and weight, and a gentleman. He will be sadly missed.”

Muzz Khan, who appeared with him last year in Much Ado About Nothing, said: “Rest In Peace, Paul Bhattacharjee. I can’t believe you’re gone, mate.”

Playwright Duncan Gates quoted from the play: “”When you depart from me sorrow abides and happiness takes his leave”. RIP Paul Paul Bhattacharjee.”

Actor Rick Warden wrote: “Having a bad time with the news about friend and colleague Paul Bhattacharjee’s death. An intelligent & [sic] charismatic man. Very sad.”

Mr Bhattacharjee played a doctor in Casino Royale in 2006 and appeared in several episodes of EastEnders as Inzamam between 2008 and 2010.

He had also appeared in TV shows Waking the Dead, Spooks and The Bill.
