This is the dramatic moment CCTV cameras captured a man delivering his own daughter by the road side – after he and his pregnant girlfriend got stuck in a TRAFFIC JAM.

Nursery nurse Helen Osborne, 29, felt the baby’s head pop out as partner Richard Sullivan drove her to hospital.

Richard, 31, was forced to pull over to the side of the road and delivered his 8lb 2oz daughter Rosie on the front passenger seat.

Incredibly, CCTV cameras which were monitoring the busy traffic at the time captured the entire birth.

The camera operators were so keen to find out what happened to the couple they tracked them down and gave them a copy of the CCTV video as a souvenir.

Richard, an engineer from Leicester, said: ”It has to be the ultimate birth video and one which we’ll treasure forever.

”We’re going to give it to Rosie on her 18th birthday. It’ll be something she can show her own kids one day.”

The drama began as Helen and Richard got stuck in traffic as they raced to the Leicester Royal Infirmary on November 20.

Camera operators at Leicester City Council watched the drama unfold on the city’s inner ring road.

An off-duty police officer who saw what was happening is seen directing cars past the couple’s stranded Peugeot 307.

Minutes later a police patrol car – with its blue lights flashing – then pulls up and blocks the middle lane as heavy traffic builds up.

Stunned motorists can be seen staring open-mouthed as they drive just inches away from the couple’s car.

Richard said: ”You can see me running from one side of the car to the other as I’m delivering Rosie.

”Luckily she shot out like a rocket and there were no complications. It is weird watching it back now.

”The traffic was really heavy and as we were getting near the hospital, Helen said the baby’s head was coming out.

”I just whipped my hazards on. Another bloke stopped his car to see if he could help.

”His face dropped when I said my girlfriend was having a baby.”

Tense minutes tick by as Richard delivers Rosie while taking instructions from ambulance operators over the phone.

Moments after the birth, the couple are given a police escort to Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Richard said: ”I just went into auto-pilot and followed the operator’s instructions to the letter.

”Basically all I did was to make sure Helen was breathing and kept pushing.

”It all happened so quickly, Rosie was there before I had a chance to think.

”The only difficult bit was stopping her falling into the footwell.

”When she came out, she was steaming because it was cold in the car.”

Helen, who also has a two-year-old daughter Abigail, said: ”When we set off from home we really thought we would make it.

”But then I shouted to Richard that the head was coming out and it was all up to him. He did brilliantly, though.

”I do remember saying ‘I’m not going to have any dignity, am I?’ because the cars were going past very slowly and people were having a good old look.

”But I didn’t think much about it really, and Rosie’s doing fine now.

”The DVD is great to watch because it’s such a good story.

Louise Payne, senior midwife at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, said: ”Well done to Mr Sullivan for keeping cool during a very stressful time.

”We’re delighted mum and baby are doing well.”
