A charity worker who scarred his girlfriend for life by battering her in the face with an IPAD has escaped jail.

Luke Taylor, 30, launched the vicious assault on his partner using the £500 tablet device while they were on a camping holiday on July 18, last year.

A court heard Taylor was upset after being teased by a group of men earlier in the night in a pub on the campsite in Wentnor, Shrops.

But he flew into a rage once back inside the tent after his girlfriend tried to take a cigarette out of his trouser pocket.

Drunken Taylor then pinned his partner to the ground by the throat and repeatedly smashed her around the head with his i-Pad.

The woman – who was not named in court – required three stitches to a nasty head wound and was left badly bruised following the attack.

On Tuesday Taylor, from Nottingham, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

He was sentenced to 26 weeks imprisonment, suspended for two years, and ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.

Taylor – who volunteers for charities Macmillan, Cancer Research and the Red Cross –  was also told to pay £750 in compensation to his former partner and given a one year restraining order.

Sentencing, Judge Peter Barrie said: “This was a serious and unpleasant assault. It was a sustained and violent attack.

“It was clearly unprovoked and unjustified and left your ex-partner with serious injuries, both visible and psychological.”

A victim statement from the woman was read to the court in which she said she had been lift with scars that  would never fully heal.

She said: “I have to look at my scars on my head every day as a reminder of this nightmarish event.”

Taylor, who represented himself at the sentencing hearing, apologised to the court and said: “I accept full responsibility for my actions and I am still extremely shocked and disgusted by them.”
