Cheeky vandals get rise out of defacing village sign

The sleepy village of Cocklake has been left without a village sign – because cheeky vandals keep stealing or defacing it.

Pranksters have repeatedly used white paint to remove the ‘L’ so the sign reads ‘Cock ake’.

But now the whole sign has been stolen and two requests for a new one – which would cost £300 – have been turned down by Wedmore Parish Council in Somerset.

Chairman Mal Johnson said the signs were stolen or defaced ”pretty much every time they are put up”.

He said: ”Every generation that does this rite of passage thinks it’s the first time it’s been done.

”There’s a slightly light hearted side to the Cocklake sign, but the real issue is cost.”

The parish is now looking into erecting different signs to try to put off would-be thieves and vandals but it is unclear whether this would take place, he added.
