An 11-year-old girl was fighting for life today after falling into a cave during a clifftop walk with her family.

The youngster tumbled through a gap at the top of a rock face and landed in the water-filled cavern.

Dozens of holidaymakers witnessed the fall at Droskyn Point at Perranporth in Cornwall.

Police and lifeguards raced to the victim before an air ambulance flew her to Treliske Hospital in Truro.

The girl, who is on holiday from her home in Hampshire, is said to be in a critical condition following the fall at around 1.15pm.

A police spokesman said: ”Police were called to Perranporth beach after reports a young girl had fallen from a cliff.

”On arrival officers discovered an 11 year old girl, who was with her family, had fallen through a gap in a cliff into a water filled cave.

”A Police Community Support Officer was quickly in attendance along with beach lifeguards before further help form the other emergency services arrived.

”The girl, who is from Hampshire, was airlifted to Treliske Hospital where she remains in a critical condition. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

A spokesman for hospital said she was taken to the accident and emergency department but it was too early to confirm her condition.

A RNLI spokesman said: ”The child was treated at the scene by RNLI lifeguards and has been airlifted to Treliske hospital.”

So sorry to hear what happend at perenporth beach . My heart goes out to the poor family of the little girl who fell. I only hope a prevention measure is placed on the cliff. I am more than willing to help in any prevention construction that needs to be built. I hope this takes place for gods sake .
