A happy couple got an extra-special wedding present when they scooped a LOTTERY win on the morning of their big day.

Lucky Dominic Aitken, 38, and new wife Katharine Gunn, 35, were busy preparing for their nuptials when the groom got a phone call to tell him the good news.

The pair had netted £1,000 on a draw run by a local hospice – which they only began playing four months ago.

Stunned Dominic broke with marriage tradition and got on the phone to blushing bride Katharine before the ceremony to break the amazing coincidence to her.

He said: “I was just about to crack a beer open and the phone rang.

“I thought it might be important, the photographer or someone.

“But it was Fiona from the Treetops Hospice Lottery, saying we’d won £1,000.

“I just said ‘Oh my god, we’re getting married today.”

The couple went on to tie the knot at St Mary’s Church in Attenborough, Notts., on Friday, December 6.

Katharine said: “The money is being put towards our honeymoon.

“We’re hoping to go to Thailand in February and this money will be added to the other money we’ve saved for it. It will just help to make it especially memorable.”

The couple from Long Eaton, Notts., began paying into the Treetops lottery fund at the end of September, donating a monthly sum of #8.68 each to the charity.

They decided to switch from playing the National Lottery in favour of the charity draw because they felt it’s a worthwhile local cause.

Katharine added: “We just wanted to support a local charity.

“Luckily we’ve had no personal involvement with the hospice but we thought it was a worthy cause.

“We’ll carry on supporting it in the future.”
