David Beckham yesterday earned himself his “biggest fan” when he stopped by a roadside to help a broken-down motorist.

Paul Long, 46, was on the school run with his daughter, six, and son, eight, when his eight-year-old Nissan Primera broke down at a junction.

Calling in to Richard Bacon’s Radio 5 live phone-in, he spoke of his amazement as the former England captain pulled up in his car to give him a hand.

Paul said: “I was taking my kids to school this morning when the car packed up as we approached a busy roundabout on the A10.

“We were in the middle of a very busy roundabout. Cars were buzzing past and I had two kids in the back but no one stopped, no one came to help.

“After 10 minutes I saw a car had pulled over into a lay-by in the distance. Its hazard lights came on.

“A figure got out, wearing a hoodie. This sort of slipped down and as he got nearer it became apparent to me it was David Beckham.

“I said, ‘You’re David Beckham’ and then he nodded.

“He asked if we were ok and I said: ‘Could you give us a push over to the side?’ which he duly did. Someone else came to help as well.

“Then he asked again if we were ok and as he walked away I said ‘Thanks David, I love you.’

“I could only see his car in the distance, it looked like an Audi, but I could not be sure on that. It did not look flash.”

Tottenham Hotspur fan Paul declared he was now Becks’ biggest fan after his good samaritan turn.

He continued: “He was a legend and a true, honest citizen.

“I have always admired him but what he did for me was lovely. I’m his biggest fan now although I do feel a bit stupid that I told him I loved him.

“He’s a genuinely top bloke, especially as he braved the rain to do what he did.”

A spokesperson for Beckham confirmed the incident.
