An exhausted-looking Shrien Dewani is spotted on the London Underground – in the first public photo of him in the UK since being cleared of murdering his wife on honeymoon.

The 36-year-old businessman mingled with commuters and tourists as he took the Central Line last Friday afternoon.

Hollow-eyed Dewani appeared to be returning from a work-out session as he clutched a gym bag and wore trainers and a tracksuit.

Onlookers said he avoided eye-contact as he sat on the busy train from Liverpool Street.

One commuter said: “When a lady got off he sat in her seat and just looked nervous.

“He didn’t make eye contact with anyone at all, and just looked up at the adverts for the whole journey.

“He didn’t seem at ease and just looked up with his bag on his lap.

“He had big bags under his eyes and looked exhausted.”

Mr Dewani was accused of hiring hitmen to stake an ambush and shoot dead his bride Anni, 28, on their honeymoon in South Africa in 2010.

Three men – Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni – have been jailed for their role in the killing.

They claimed Mr Dewani arranged the car-jacking in which he would survive and his wife would die.

However, a judge in South Africa threw out the case against him because it was ‘riddled with inconsistencies’ and the evidence provided by the three men was flawed.

Mr Dewani, whose Bristol-based family run a care home business, was acquitted in December 2014 and a coroner ruled in October there would be no inquest.
