Five-year-old boy catches 12lb carp using a plastic toy fishing rod

A five-year-old boy stunned anglers by catching a 12lb carp using a plastic toy fishing rod and a piece of sweetcorn. Matthew Pretorius was fishing with his twin brother Markus and father Albert in South Cerney, Wilts., when he landed his monster catch. He battled for around five minutes with the carp, which almost snapped the reel on his 4ft plastic rod, before landing it on the bank.
Speaking after his big catch Matthew said: ”It was really, really massive and it was exciting. We will go again.” Father Albert, from Middleleaze, Swindon, Wilts., added: ”The look on his face when the fish came in was incredible – he’s totally hooked on fishing now.”
Matthew landed his carp on Monday during a family day out to Strait Lake in South Cerney, Wiltshire. Angler Bill Nythe, who has been fishing in the area for more than 20 years, described the catch as ”astounding”.
He said: ”This is unbelievable. A fish of that size would pull down with a lot of weight, so the fact this little chap managed to reel it in using a small plastic rod and a piece of a sweetcorn is just astounding. I think a few of the guys here would take some tips from these youngsters. There are some big fish here, but that one is definitely the largest for a very long time.”
Matthew’s mum Michelle added: ”The 12lb carp was the first fish caught using a 4ft rod with a single piece of sweetcorn. It was quite a scene to see this little rod pull out that size fish without breaking. It was a great day out and totally unbelievable.”
