The new Ford Mustang will be going on sale in the UK for the first time in 50 years with a BRIT designing the American muscle car.

Ford’s most famous car is one of the world’s most iconic motors and an unmistakable sight in films and rental depots in the USA.

And despite being the ‘most liked’ car on Facebook and more than nine million sold, the car has never been officially marketed in Britain.

But Ford unveiled the new Mustang and announced it will be coming to UK shores in 2015.

The muscle car, with its intimidating pose, will powered by a massive 5-litre V8 engine which develops more than 420bhp.

There are no official performance figures, but it is expected to be capable of 0-62mph in less than five seconds and a top speed of 155mph.

It will also, for the first time be available with a smaller, more advanced 2.3-litre ‘Ecoboost’ engine with 302bhp.

Ford is being tight-lipped on costs, but experts at What Car? are estimating it should come in at around £30,000.

The new Mustang was unveiled to European audiences in Barcelona and there was reason for Brits to be proud with the design headed up by Moray Callum.

Mr Callum is the younger brother of Ian Callum, the Scot behind a number of Aston Martins and, more recently, the new Jaguar F-Type.

He said: “You only get one chance to make a first impression and when you see this car, you immediately see a Mustang strong and true.”

The original Ford Mustang was first sold on April 17, 1964, with the latest version going on sale in the States in 2014, its 50th year.

It is known as one of the most iconic muscle cars thanks to starring roles in films like Bullitt and Gone in 60 Seconds.

The new Mustang features all-new front and rear suspension systems as Ford looks to give it the handling prowess and ride of an European sports car.

It will be available as a fastback or convertible when it hits UK forecourts in 2015.

Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development, said: “Ford Mustang inspires passion like no other car.

“The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonate with people, even if they’ve never driven one.

“Mustang is definitely more than just a car – it is the heart and soul of Ford.”

Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe, added: “The new Mustang is one of the most hotly anticipated cars ever, we are very excited to now give drivers in Europe the opportunity to experience the real thing.”
