Fourth Cambridge University dies in suspected suicide

The body of tragic Tess Maddock, 21, was recovered from sea off the East Sussex coast near the notorious suicide spot of Beachy Head.

Tess’ death has stunned tutors and friends at Cambridge University’s Jesus College where she was described as a ”brilliant” student set to graduate with a first class degree.

She is the fourth Cambridge University student to die suddenly in tragic circumstances since term began in September.

Gifted Peterhouse student Mingwei Tan, 20, died after she was hit by a bus and dragged one mile through London on September 30.

Engineering student George Starling, 19, who described Mingwei as his ”college mentor”, was found dead in his Cambridge apartment four days later.

Cambridge University plunged into mourning a third time when Girton College law undergraduate Pavel Kantchev, 22, was found dead in his room on October 11.

Tess, who comes from Bristol, was described as a ”much loved daughter” by her family at her funeral on Monday.

Dr Stephen Siklos, the college’s senior tutor, paid tribute to a ”brilliant” student.

He said: ”The college has been shocked and saddened by the news of Tess Maddock’s death.

”Tess was a brilliant theology student who had gained a starred first in her first-year exams.

”She also played hockey for the college and for the university women’s second team. Sadly, she had been unable to return to college this term due to ill health.

”Tess had many friends in the college and university and will be much missed. The thoughts of everyone here are with Tess’s family at this time.”

On her hockey team’s website Tess lists her hobbies as ”friends, books, hockey and squash”.

Her favourite holiday destination was cycling around the UK and her aims for hockey and life are given as ”success and happiness”.

Tess’ body was recovered from water off Beachy Head on Saturday October 30 and her funeral was held at St Alban’s Church, in Bristol, on Monday.

A funeral notice describes Tess as the ”much loved daughter” of Harry and Catherine Maddock and ”dear sister” of her brother Ewan.

A spokeswoman for East Sussex police said: ”The body of a 21-year-old woman from Bristol was recovered from the sea by lifeboat after she was seen to fall from cliffs near Beachy Head on Saturday afternoon, October 30.

”Police were called by a witness at 2.50pm, by a man who had seen the woman between Birling Gap and Beachy Head.

”The woman’s next of kin have been informed and the matter has been passed to the coroner.”
