The stepdad of JLS star Aston Merrygold today said they had split up because they had outgrown the boy band tag.

Oz Merrygold, 45, said he was “very proud” of son Aston, 25, who shot to success in 2008 after the group came runners-up on the X Factor.

After five number ones, a string of Brit awards and numerous sell out gigs across the country, the band revealed on Wednesday they had decided to call it a day.

Oz said: “We were aware they were going to be making the announcement, and had been talking about it.

“All the parents are saddened by the announcement but we respect their decision.

“It has been a fantastic five years, but we all realised it had to come to an end at some point, and it is great to see them go out at the top.

“I know it is something Aston wanted to do.

“I think they realised they had outgrown the boy band tag, and I know they will go on and be successful in whatever they do.

“I know Aston has a few things lined up.”

Oz, from Peterborough, Cambs., added: “Marvin is now expecting a baby with his wife as well. All the band have other interests now, so there are a few things going on.

“There has been a lot of reaction to the news they are splitting up, and it will be very emotional for them and their fans.

“They are staying friends, and there is no animosity between them.

“Aston is an astute lad, and people don’t give him enough credit for making the right decision at the right time.

“I am very proud of him for coming this far – I am sure there will be a mix of emotions at the final tour.”

JLS announced their split just days after hitting the top 10 in the Sunday Times Rich List for young musicians.

It revealed each member of the group was worth an estimated £6million.

The band will complete one final album titled “Goodbye: The Greatest Hits” plus a tour at the end of the year before going their separate ways.
