Liverpool eyeing up Newcastle defender

Liverpool are rumoured to be planning a second transfer raid on Newcastle United with the Anfield club eyeing up defender Jose Enrique.

The 25-year-old Spaniard, who has been in impressive form this season for the Toon Army, was watched by Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli at the weekend.

Enrique, who signed for Newcastle during Sam Allardyce’s ill-fated reign in 2007, could be the solution to Liverpool’s troubled left-back problem.

Over the past year the Merseyside club has used Emiliano Insua, Fabio Aurelio and Daniel Agger in the position while flop signing Paul Konchesky was quickly offloaded on loan following a disastrous first few months.

In recent weeks Kenny Dalglish has employed right-back Glen Johnson in the position with the England defender looking reinvigorated at a result. But it’s unknown whether the Reds’ manager sees Johnson as a long-term solution for the position.

If Liverpool decide to make Newcastle an offer for Enrique, it could be the second time the north-east club lose a star man to the Red following the record £30 million capture of striker Andy Carroll on transfer deadline day.
