A millionaire motorist and his passenger have escaped uninjured from one of the most expensive car crashes in history.

Lucky Steffen Korbach was driving his £1.4 million Pagani Zonda F Clubsport Roadster on a wet road when he lost control, spinning the rare supercar and smashing it into a barrier.

The crash left the Zonda – one of just 25 – a mangled wreck with the front smashed in, one rear wheel seemingly detached from the body of the 7.3-litre supercar and debris strewn over the motorway.

However, the Zonda’s cell channeled the energy from the crash around the car’s body and Korbach, 28, and his 21-year-old passenger amazingly emerged from the crash with only minor bruises. The car isn’t fitted with airbags.

Korbach, a German businessman, was travelling on the A10 Autostrada in Italy when he came a cropper.

After driving through roadworks and a 60km/h speed limit, Korbach accelerated up to just over 100km/h (62mph) when he drove into a pool of surface water and aquaplaned.

Despite being an experienced supercar driver, he couldn’t correct the Zonda’s position as it collided with the roadside barriers. Despite the serious damage and potential cost, it’s understood Korbach is looking at getting the Zonda repaired.

He has rubbished claims made by local media that he was travelling at 190mph – explaining the lively Zonda that can be difficult to control in certain road conditions.

The Zonda F Clubsport Roadster he was driving is rated as one the greatest modern day supercars with Top Gear host Richard Hammond a massive fan.

At £1.4million, it’s one of the world’s most expensive new cars with only the £1.5 million Koenigsegg CCXR and £1.6 million Bugatti Veyron Super Sport costlier. None of these cars are believed to have ever been involved in crashes.

With a rear-mounted V12 engine producing 650bhp, the Italian car is capable of 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 214mph. It lapped the Top Gear track quicker than the Bugatti Veyron.

Tommy Wareham, director of prestige dealer Super Vettura said: “The Pagani Zonda is quite possibly the last ever true-blooded supercar – it’s a ferocious poster car for the 21st century.

“It’s incredibly exclusive and bespoke and, as these pictures show, it’s as safe as it is fast.”

Korbach, the multi-millionaire owner of Porsche tuning outfit Gemballa, was on his way to Milan for the official presentation of the new Pagani Huayra – which he has recently ordered.

The Huayra is Pagani’s replacement for the Zonda and Korbach’s new model will join an eye-watering fleet which includes two Bugatti Veyrons, two Lamborghinis and a Porsche-based Gemballa Mirage.

He has also ordered the new McLaren MP4-12C – a car widely anticipated to be Britain’s greatest ever supercar.

I know one guy crashed his Porsche 911 on a slip road going onto the A27 nr Brighton – charged with dangerous driving – had the traction aids off, raining – told the magistrate that it MUST have been the cars fault as he wasn’t doing more than 40MPH which the magistrate believed (nothing to do with the wide throttle, rain, corner etc)
