Here’s something for those who want to go the extra step this Mothering Sunday – a chocolate shoe costing £700.

The life-size ‘Saffire Slipper’ range, handcrafted with finest Belgian chocolate, can be eaten as the ultimate treat.

But just 50 are being made strictly to order and the British manufacturers say they could become collectors’ items and last up to 10 years.

The 7.5″-long shoes – equivalent to a ladies’ size 3 – are modelled on designer stilettos by top names such as Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin.

Each one takes a week to produce and is coated with a layer of cocoa butter before receiving several coats of red, blue, purple or black food glitter.

A form of edible enamel gives them a long-lasting protective sheen which means they can be put on show under a protective perspex cover for 10 years.

The shoes are so precious they are hand-delivered to customers from the family-run Saffire Handmade Chocolates workshop in Taverham, Norfolk.

Saffire’s artisan chocolatier Gary Funnell he said: “The Saffire Slipper is both a chocolate shoe of the highest quality and work of art in its own right.

“Though the shoe can be eaten, collectors can choose to display it permanently if they wish.

“It comes mounted on a solid dark chocolate base sat in a wooden base to allow it to be stood on almost any surface without leaving chocolate marks.

“As long as the shoe is kept away from sunlight and direct heat it can be kept on display for years without fear of melting.”

Angus Kennedy, Editor of Kennedy’s Confection, Britain’s oldest confectionery magazine, said: “Most chocolate shoes retail for around £35 to £50 so the Saffire Sipper is definitely one step beyond all of them.

“It’s also one of the world’s most expensive confectionery creations I can think of, but at least you can put it on display.

“Usually, all buyers are left with is a sweet memory of their pricey purchase.”
