Newborn baby helps new dad pop the question

A first-time father proposed to his girlfriend moments after she gave birth by dressing the newborn up in a babygrow which had the big question on it.

Proud Shane Brinkley, 25, handed over little Nevaeh with an outfit which read, “Mummy, will you marry my daddy?” to new mum Lauren French, 22.

The tear-jerking moment was captured on camera by a midwife as the 7lb 13oz youngster was exchanged and Shane patiently waited for an answer.

Lauren sobbed and said ‘of course’ as she lay in the hospital bed in Peterborough City Hospital in Peterborough, Cambs., on October 6.

The qualified hairdresser said: “I just sobbed and then burst out in tears when I saw the question.

“I looked at her and I cried some more and then Shane said ‘Well, will you marry me?’, and I said ‘of course I will’.

“He had been planning it for around eight months and he managed to pretty much keep it a big secret.

“We haven’t had time really to make any plans yet but Shane said he wanted a firework display and we are aiming for 2018.”

Lauren gave birth on October 6 just at around 6am after going into labour at 11pm the previous night.

She said the birth was “brilliant” and didn’t have gas and air until she was eight centimetres dilated.

They named their little girl Nevaeh, which is heaven spelt backwards.

Scaffolder Shane popped the big question at around 9am after Lauren had finished having her stitches done following giving birth.

The new father said: “I wanted to make the proposal different.

“I’d been planning it for eight months. It was really difficult to keep secret, only Lauren’s mum and my best mate knew I was going to do it.”

Lauren was so shocked by the unexpected question, she had to be prompted to reply by Shane.

Lauren, who lives with Shane in Peterborough, Cambs., said: “Nevaeh is brilliant. I still cry every time I look at her.

“Motherhood is the best thing, I just love it and love everything about it. It is so rewarding.”

The couple had met in December 2014 on a night out and sadly Lauren suffered from a miscarriage last year so Nevaeh is the couple’s firstborn.
