Derek Llambias, the managing director of Newcastle United, has upset fans after criticising club legend Alan Shearer.

The club chief was responding to remarks from Shearer (pictured) regarding the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool in a club record £35 million deal.

BBC pundit Shearer, who scored a record 206 goals for United, admitted his frustration the club he loves failed to make any signings following the sale of Carroll, labelling it “staggering”.

But now Llambias has hit back at Shearer’s criticism, slamming the 40-year-old former England captain.

He told a newspaper: “Do I care what Alan Shearer has to say?

“When he ran this club (in 2009) we were relegated after picking up just five points from his eight games in charge.”

The comments have riled Newcastle fans who see Shearer as a godlike figure following his ten-year spell on Tyneside.

One fan said: “What a d*** head saying that about Shearer. Alan gave up the chance to play for Man Utd to play for his beloved Newcastle, he’s a proper geordie lad who is loyal to his home town club. How many players can you say that about these days?”

Another added: “As for Llambias having a pop at Shearer when he was manager, just goes to show what he knows about football.

“Newcastle at that time were in a right mess and Shearer tried his damned hardest to sort it all out but had very little time.

“If anyone was to blame it was Mike Ashley and his board.”
