Dalmatians usually weigh between 20 and 25kg, so animal carers put the podgy canine on a healthy diet and exercise regime to shed the pounds.

Nine-year-old Millie is now tucking into healthy meals and enjoying regular exercise after she was looked after by staff at the Dogs Trust in Glasgow.

She has slimmed down and her new owners, Astra Foster and Donald Lair, plan to carry on with the regime.swns_fat_dog_04Astra, from Edinburgh, said: “When we first saw Millie on the Dogs Trust website, we were instantly won over by her smile.

“Older dogs have so much to give as they get a new lease of life when they find a loving home.

“We plan on making sure Millie continues her healthy new lifestyle and look forward to jumping in the car, getting out of the city and going for long walks in the country.”

Dogs Trust Deputy Veterinary Director Runa Hanaghan said: “Excess weight puts strain on a dog’s body, particularly the heart and joints, so it’s really important that every dog has regular exercise and isn’t over-fed.

“Any dog owner concerned about their dog’s health who wants their dog to lose weight should seek advice from a vet.”
