A giant stag bellows out his rutting cry in a spectacular show of male dominance – just before he mates with his doe.

Rutting stag

The impressive large-antlered red deer let off the fierce ear-piercing call, to warn off any male rivals,

The picture was captured in the scenic surroundings of Margam Park near Swansea, South Wales, today.

Deer have bred on the 850-acre country estate since Norman times.

Competition to rut, or mate, is fierce amongst red deer – the UK’s largest native land mammals.

The female doe is only in her fertile phase for a day or less each year.
