Stuck au van: Drivers of vans never let out at junctions

Motorists are less likely to let vans pull out at junctions than any other vehicle, a study revealed today.

While nine out of ten drivers regularly give the nod to cars waiting to join queueing traffic, one in three said they would ignore a white man van.

Nearly half the drivers polled said they examined a car’s make and model before deciding whether to give way.

Other vehicles which have less chance of being let out emerged as BMW 3 Series, X Series and Z Series.

Lorries, Audi TTs, Ferraris, Land Rovers and Lamborghini Diablos also have little or no chance of being waved through.

Will Thomas, head of motor at www.confused.com, which carried out the study among 3,000 motorists, said: ”Sitting in traffic can be stressful, and it can be made even worse if you have to wait to feed into a line of cars.

”You often end up relying on someone to let you out in front of them, but it seems those in a white van could be waiting a long time.

”Maybe the stereotype of the traditional white van driver isn’t helping them.

”And perhaps they should let more people out themselves. If people see them giving way more, maybe the favour will be returned.”

The study also revealed those in a Peugeot 207s are most likely to be allowed to slip out of a junction, followed by a Renault Megane and Vauxhall Astra.

Drivers in Vauxhall Zafiras and VW Polos completed top five.

The Renault Clio came sixth, while those driving a Ford Focus was seventh. Honda Accords, Nissan Almeras and Seats are also looked upon favourably.

Researchers also revealed good-looking drivers are in luck with three quarters of blokes admitting they are more likely to wave in a pretty woman, regardless of the car she was driving.

And 54 per cent of women would happily let a handsome male driver slip in front of them in a queue of traffic.

But the study also found refusing to let someone out can lead to trouble, with 29 per cent of people having a row with someone over not giving way.

And another 28 per cent even said leaving people waiting at a junction has even led to road rage.

Will Thomas added: ”Unfortunately prejudices appear to be rife on the road with the car you drive and even how you look affecting the way other motorists treat you.”
