Super yacht rumoured to be owned by Lord Dyson spotted

An historic super yacht involved in the abdication of King Edward VIII has been spotted for the first time since Lord Dyson reportedly bought it and paid for a £25million refit.

The Nahlin launched in 1930 and was later chartered by King Edward VIII and Bessie Wallis-Simpson during their infamous love affair.

The yacht has spent much of the last 70 years as a floating restaurant on the river Danube until it was reportedly bought by Sir James Dyson.

The vacuum cleaner entrepreneur is believed to have shelled out £25million restoring the steam ship to its former glory at a German shipyard last year.

An amateur photographer captured the super yacht on camera at around 4pm on Saturday as it entered the harbour at Dartmouth, Devon.

One Dartmouth resident, who asked not to be named, said: ”The Nahlin looked completely out of place compared to all the smaller boats moored next to it.

”It caused quite a stir when it arrived because a lot of people who live here know bits and pieces about its history.”

The 1,574 ton Nahlin, which is 91.4m in length and can hold 58 crew and 351 passengers, was built for Lady Annie Henrietta Yule in 1930.

In 1936 the super yacht was chartered by King Edward VIII and used by him and his lover Bessie Wallis-Simpson for a cruise through the Adriatic.

In December the same year King Edward abdicated to marry Bessie after the high profile cruise attracted huge media attention,

In 1937 the Nahlin was bought by the Romanian Royal Family and after surviving the war was owned by the Romanian Ministry of Culture.

During that time it was employed as a charter yacht, a sailing museum and finally a floating restaurant on the river Danube.

In 1999 the Nahlin returned to British waters and was reportedly bought by Sir James Dyson before undergoing a £25million refit to change its turbines to diesel engines.

I was standing on the battlements of Kingswear Castle (in background, top picture) taking photos of my own of this fabulous vessel. Could I have a high-resolution copy of your photo, please? Happy to swap for one of mine from the other side!
