A new free game saw off Angry Birds to become the faster ever app to hit 50 million downloads.
The game – Temple Run 2 – was released earlier last month and was downloaded six million times in its first 24 hours.
It hit 50 million downloads in 13 days – 22 days quicker than the previous record holder Angry Birds Space which racked up 50 million downloads in 35 days.
The free-to-play game is the sequel to Temple Run, which was a favourite of stars like Wayne Rooney, and was downloaded more than 170 million times.
Mobile game Temple Run 2 currently occupies the top slot on the App Store, Google Play and Amazon Marketplace.
Co-founder of developers Imangi Studios, Keith Shepherd, said: “Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us.
“The game has performed beyond our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled that gamers and fans have embraced Temple Run 2 in such a short period of time.”
Temple Run 2 rewards players with coins and gems for escaping from dangerous ruins, and has more characters than its predecessor.
US-based Imangi Studios is a husband and wife team who set out in 2008 with the goal of creating small fun games for everyone.
Keith Shepherd and Natalia Lukyanova, based in North Carolina, have even released a Disney-tie-in called Temple Run: Brave.
Smartphones are being hailed as the next generation gaming consoles, and the massive popularity of games such as Temple Run and Angry Birds are far overshadowing PS3 and Xbox360 games sales.#
