The 36-year-old, who has been the champion jockey an incredible 15 times, scooped more than 40 per cent of the votes.

Darts legend Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor was the runner-up while gold-winning heptathlete Jessica Ennis came third for the second year running.

Picking up the award, McCoy said: “This is an unbelievable feeling standing here in front of all these amazing people.

“It’s not something that anyone would be silly enough to dream about, even me.

“My daughter Eve, who is three, was shouting at me when she knew I was going to be on television this evening.

“I want to keep going now. I want to be a champion jockey and I want to be at the top of my sport. I don’t know how long I will go on – time is the enemy of any sportsperson.”

But despite McCoy finally getting the recognition for his amazing achievement in horse racing, the biggest cheer of the night went to David Beckham who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award – at the age of just 35.

An emotional Beckham was handed the honour by fellow Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton after a momentous standing ovation from everyone at the LG Arena in Birmingham.

Holding back tears Beckham, whose wife Victoria and three children were in attendance, dedicated the award to the British armed personnel fighting in Afghanistan.

Colin Montgomerie was named Coach of the Year after captaining Europe to the Ryder Cup while teenage diving phenomenon Tom Daley was named Young Sports Personality of the Year for the third time following his double gold at the Commonwealth Games in India.

F1 boss Sir Frank Williams was handed the Helen Rollason award for his outstanding achievement in the face of adversity. Sir Frank has achieved enormous success in motorsport despite being paralysed following a car crash in the 1980s.
