World’s most expensive Porsche sells for $4 million

This unique car has become the world’s most expensive Porsche after it was sold at auction – for a staggering $4 million.

The 1970 Porsche 917 Interserie Spyder goes from 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds and a top speed of over 240mph.

It has long been dubbed ‘The World’s Greatest Sports Car’ and had the price tag to match when it was sold for 3,965,000 (US dollars) in America at the weekend.

The stunning yellow and red sleek car made its debut in the 1972-73 Le Mans 24-Hour race for the Gulf-JW Automotive racing team when it crashed out.

It was lovingly restored and subsequently involved in races throughout Europe, before being snapped up by a private collector, who has stored it since.

A spokesman for Bonhams, which auctioned the car, said: ”This mouth-watering example of one of the rarest of Porsche 917-series models has a well-understood and very respectable racing history.

”It represents, in essence, a high-water mark of motor racing history, as one of the often-voted greatest racing cars of all time.”

The stunning vehicle was part of a sale of rare and exclusive cars which went under the hammer at ‘The Quail; a Motorsports Gathering’ in Monterey, California on Saturday.

Other vehicles under the hammer include Bugatti Veyron with a top speed of 253 mph, which sold for over $1 million, a 1975 red Carrera RSA which fetched $330,000 and a 1967 factory racing Porsche Type 910 which sold for $720,000.

  1. Wow, four million? The owner of that Porsche will either keep it very safe and secure, or he’ll enjoy driving that car lots of times. Of course, it could be both — that car’s got a lot of right to be the worlds most expensive Porsche!

  2. Cars with history like this will always be expensive. You can’t buy the legacy it left on the road. The person who bought that car practically has the bragging rights to say that his ride is the most expensive on Earth!
